What is Nexo?

Nexo is not a classic crypto exchange but a platform for crypto loans and interest. You can deposit coins as collateral and instantly borrow stablecoins or EUR — without selling.

Nexo also offers a Visa card with crypto backing and an 'Earn' product paying interest on stablecoins and Bitcoin.

Verdict

Pros and cons

Pros
 • Crypto borrowing without selling (no KESt trigger)
 • High interest on stablecoins (with NEXO-token loyalty)
 • Nexo Visa card with cashback
 • Insured custodial storage (Ledger Vault)
 • Simple interface
Cons
 • CeFi risk (custodial — coins held by Nexo)
 • Best earn rates only with NEXO token
 • No FMA registration
 • Liquidation risk on loans
 • History: SEC settlement in the US (2023)

What can I do at Nexo?

Nexo is primarily a lending and earn platform — you earn interest on coins you hold or take out crypto-collateralised loans. Spot trading is available but not the main focus.

Staking yields (examples)

Nexo Earn yields are not PoS staking yields but lending interest. They depend on the loyalty tier and lock-up duration (Flex / Fixed Term).

CoinAPY (indicative)
BTC~3–7%
ETH~3–7%
USDC/USDT (stables)~8–14%
NEXO (token)~6–8%

Note: Offering and terms may change. Staking APYs are indicative figures (as of 2026) and fluctuate with the market. Only the provider's own data is binding.

Fees

Spot trading is very cheap at 0–0.2%. The real cost arises on loans: from 2.9% p.a. (with NEXO-token loyalty), otherwise up to ~14% p.a.

Card spending has no fee, but cashback terms depend on your loyalty status.

Security

Nexo uses BitGo and Ledger Vault for custody and is insured via Lloyd's. 2FA and whitelisting are standard.

CeFi risk remains: You give up control over your coins. In the event of insolvency you'd be registered as a creditor — like with Celsius or BlockFi (both went bust in 2022).

Taxes in Austria

Borrowing itself does not trigger a tax event — you're not selling. That makes Nexo interesting for Austrian investors who need liquidity without triggering KESt.

Interest income in Austria counts as income from capital assets and is taxed at 27.5% KESt. Nexo provides reports compatible with Blockpit.

Liquidation risk: If the price of your collateral coins drops sharply, Nexo may force-sell your position — which then does trigger KESt, on top of the price loss.

Who is Nexo for?

 • Long-term holders who need liquidity without selling
 • Stablecoin savers who want to earn interest
 • Card users who want to spend crypto in everyday life
 • Not suited for pure spot buyers (Bitpanda fits better)

Nexo: 7.6/10

Nexo is a specialist tool, not an all-rounder. For borrowing and the card it's one of the best offerings in Europe — but the CeFi risks are real. Only park part of your portfolio at Nexo and keep the bulk in your own wallet.
